Any advice on how to quiet the grinding and droning noise from the diff in a 2004 m3 with 145,000 klms . I live on the Gold coast in Queensland Australia and don't know where to take it to have it assessed. I have had the diff oil changed 3 weeks ago with the Castrol recommended product, but , I feel the noise is still getting louder. I have put in into neutral and coasted and listened and then back into gear and the gearbox adds to the noise only marginally. HELP.

What diff fluid did you use when changed? Was it OEM?
Here's the correct fluid:
OEM fluid Castrol SAF-XJ + FM booster
BMW part# 83 22 2 282 583
Ive heard that the wrong fluid will cause the diff to continue to whine
Here's the tran fluid info:
OEM Fluid (6mt & SMG) Castrol MTF-LT-2 (NOT LT-3) fluid
BMW part# 83 22 0 309 031

Yes thanks . That's what we put in and isn't it expensive, however, only the best for my car.

Did the noise start before or after the oil change ?
