Discovered this forum the other day and registered immediately! Looks like an incredibly useful resource for us E46 M3 owners. As is often the case, I found this site whilst searching for a solution to some SMG issues I'm having with my car...... So my M3 is a 2004 E46 SMG. Right now the car is pretty much immobile..... It won't stay in any forward or reverse gear for any length of time, immediately pops back into neutral as soon as the car moves. Most of the time, the engine won't even start now :-( I've pulled the codes via INPA, and there's a variety of them, some occurring more frequently than others. A couple of the codes are fairly common (e.g. 56 switching on time....) but there's a few weird and wonderful ones I've never seen or heard of before?! Tried googling some of these codes but not having much luck identifying what the root issue is here. Thought I'd post them here, and see if anyone can make any sense of them. I'd just like to have some idea of what parts need to be checked/replaced, before I go to an Indy/dealer for a quote...... Thanks for any light that can be shed on this, much appreciated! Most commonly occurring:56 Switching on time of hydraulic unit 53 Lower level of pressure reached HE Frequently occurring:23 Solenoid valve clutch 59 Clutch control 35 Hydraulic pressure sensor evaluation Rarely (occurred once or twice only):57 Misuse of hydraulic unit 86 Bleeding 50 Selector angle cannot be regulated Thank you

When did all of this start happening!? I'll help you out, I have to learn a few things first. I can see you have been clearing the codes and seeing them return. Are you driving often? Is this an issue the entire time you drive or just with heat? Have you tested your battery voltage?

Is this an issue the entire time you drive or just with heat? Have you tested your battery voltage? Thank you for your reply. The problem started a couple of months ago and initially only occurred with heat. However, now it happens the entire time, i.e as soon as I try to drive off, the yellow cog light comes on with a variation of the above codes, and pops out of gear into neutral. No, I haven't tested the battery voltage. Do you mean the dashboard test? I should also point out that I had the pump changed for a refurbed one (new motor and temp sensor apparently) about 6 months ago..... No sure if that is what's faulty, and the cause of these problems? I've changed the relay a couple of times - no help. Also, I can hear the pump priming fine.

Im compiling some new info which I will post soon. Thank you, that would be really helpful! :-) I'm ready to swap out my refurbed pump for a brand new one from BMW if necessary.... Just want to make sure that's the issue before I go spending £££, since the pump motor has been replaced already!

I didnt realize the motor was replaced. Can you list parts that have been changed thus far? Just curious and want to know the entire history. -Thanks

Just curious and want to know the entire history. -Thanks SMG-wise, the only part I've changed was the pump. I replaced the original pump (at 116k miles) for a refurbed unit. I was told the refurbed pump had a new motor and temperature sensor. In total, I've done less than 1000 miles on this refurbed pump before the above problems started Other than that, I haven't changed any SMG-related parts. Edit: I originally changed the pump as described above, due to heat-related issues (error code 56, dropping out of gear when hot, etc)

Have you ever replaced the salmon relay in the past?

Have you ever replaced the salmon relay in the past? Yes, it did nothing for the car and I put the original back in. The one i bought is in a bag in my parts bin currently. The one in my car is from 2004 and works just fine. *edit: I did this when I had Gear Position Sensor issues.

I experienced something similar a few weeks back.
Driving on a hot summer day then suddenly the smg cog and ses lights came on. I was stuck in traffic and had to drive a couple of miles to get to work. I left the car in the parking lot for 8 hrs then replaced the salmon relay before driving home. Unfortunately both lights stayed on and halfway home, stopped for some gas. To my surprise when I started the car up, there was nothing! No clicks, no crank. Tried a few times and still nothing. I prepared myself to call AAA to get it towed home. After about 5 minutes, I tried starting it again and suddenly, it started! The smg light went away, but the ses was still on. I was able to drive home, but felt the car a little sluggish.
The next day when I fired it back up, this time the ses light went away and everything back to normal. The only residual effect I noticed from that event is it seems I don't have the same performance as I did between 2k - 3k rpm. I don't know what's causing this and even had the plugs replaced, but still the same. (BTW the only code was p1717)

The wife drove the car yesterday and she said the SES light came on again on her way to work. The first time the SES light came on since it happened to me as mentioned in my last post. She said it went off when she started the car to go home.
Now I'm puzzled by this issue and don't know where to start. I guess I'll take it to my mechanic to read the codes. Any advise or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

It looks like the code 56(oasis2007) and P1717 indicate the same possible issue.
From what I have read, if the salmon relay isn't malfunctioning then it is indeed the pump gone bad. I don't like my answer here because I would like to know WHAT in the pump has gone bad. Until I get my hands on a used/damaged unit and rebuild I just don't know.

Update: the next day prior to seeing the mechanic, I filled the car up with gas and added a bottle of Techron fuel injection cleaner. Less than half a mile later, she started running fine again. It's been almost 250 miles now and she's still running fine.
Figured I just got some bad gas, so seeing the mechanic just got postponed! I let it ride for a little bit more and see if the issue with power in the 2k - 3k range will come back. Nonetheless, I will see my mechanic in about 3000 miles and hopefully not any sooner.

From what I can gather, there are other faulty parts with my pump which cannot be replaced easily (e.g. solenoid valves etc?). Shame, as the pump now has a new motor and temp sensor which appear to be all good otherwise.
So I'll therefore be ordering a new pump from the dealers and getting it fitted by my indy.

Sorry to hear. It does seem, after seeing this video, that the electronics in the unit do fail. It seems as though a full pump rebuild along with relocating into the front engine "bin" is the answer to a lasting SMG system that would not suffer along the way. I think Im going to start a new section of the forum dedicated to the SMG system

Hey, I decided to stop pi$$ing about and just bought a brand new pump from the dealer, which has now arrived :-)
I'll be getting it fitted next week, hopefully that will be the end of my troubles....... I may try and recoup some of my losses by selling the new motor from the refurbed pump which comes out of my car.
